Hi! I hope it's okay to send asks, but I was searching for anything at all about Tanya Huff's Valor series and I somehow found a singular post from 2017 where you were in the replies, and I'm hoping to find people to talk about these books with. Do you still like them?
I DO
But I have in fact not read them since the last one came out around the last time I posted about it, and remember nothing in particular about anything besides the fact that I enjoyed them?
(Tanya Huff has always been an author I'm willing to check out, I was reading her fantasy stuff back in the 90s too.)
So while I am delighted to know there are people out there who like them (they are definitely recommended to anyone who sees this who has a passing interest in sci-fi or space military tactics) I do not have enough in my brain to actually contribute to talking about them atm.
There was a Valor discord server I vaguely recall someone mentioning years ago, but I cannot for the life of me remember who hosted it to ask if it's still out there
sorry I'm not much help

Transconfederate / Transfederate
Transconfederate (or transfederate) is a label for those who identify as Confederate and have a strong connection to the history and culture of the Confederate States of America.
What do the colors on the flag represent? Red represents courage and valor Blue symbolizes justice and determination ❤️🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
They often wish to have been able to face the struggle of living in the Old South. While the Confederacy ended in 1865, transfederates feel a sense of cultural alienation from the mainstream transgender community, which they perceive as being too focused on issues of gender identity and gender expression and not enough on preserving Southern heritage. They may feel a strong connection to Confederate symbols, traditions, and values, even while acknowledging the complex and often problematic history of the Confederacy. It is important to note that transconfederates are controversial and the term is often used in a derogatory manner. Many people find it offensive and see it as an attempt to reclaim or romanticize a history of slavery and oppression. However, it is also important to recognize the lived experiences of individuals who identify as transfederates. Their feelings of cultural belonging and historical connection are real, even if they are not universally accepted or understood.

Lore bump - ///English///
In my universe, mascots are divided in two large guilds: Olympians and Claners.
Olympians are individuals who embody the Olympic values, striving to safeguard life and promote the use of sporting competitions as an alternative to traditional forms of conflict. Upon attaining the status of Olympian, they receive a ring, also known as a stigma, which symbolizes their most exemplary value; such as perseverance, integrity, sportsmanship, excellence, or brotherhood. This is done through a ceremonial process, or in some exceptional casses, by being blessed by the archons.
The Claners are members of the FIFA CLAN, an organization that controls the mascots of FIFA events and associated confederations, promoting soccer as an alternative to the evils of the world, and also highlighting the vices of the Olympians. They gain power through amulets and spells, and have ranks marked by stars (gold, silver and bronze), assigned according to the role and rank of their members.
///Español///
This mascot, for example. It is a special case because it is in the middle of the Olympian/Clanner factions. There are times when a mascot can straddle these groups, but very few get away with it; their presence usually creates conflicts of interest.

Mort Kunstler - “Valor In Gray”
“Northern troops in the Army of the Potomac made repeated assaults over the wide-open killing fields below the Confederate line on Marye's Heights. That's what I tried to portray in Courage in Blue, which shows the 20th Maine charging up the hill in the thick of fighting - led by Lt. Col. Joshua Chamberlain. But what about the men on the other side? I kept thinking about them as I painted the 20th Maine. They faced a superior force composed of the finest army at the time - and they held their ground and drove back those grand legions in blue.”

Pride Month 2024 - Day 18
And now we come to the first fic that someone put in a request for, specifically.
Marines are trained to handle anything...but the training never accounted for being stranded, alone, on a world without even the rudiments of post-Industrial era tech, and no way home. Join a human soldier as he encounters a species unlike any the human race as encountered before. Wow, there's no good way to write a synopsis for this without spoiler soup being served up. Requested by ontheline
I do have the entire outline of this one plotted out and approved by the original requester and I'm intending to get back to it one of these days. It was my first attempt at writing a "Human in Equestria" fic and my first real "Humans are Space Orcs" work. I started writing it right as I came off of reading book 6 of The Confederation of Valor series, and you can tell from some of the plot devices and set dressing I've used just in this one chapter.
At the moment, my hyperfixation on a trans MC in a 90% original fanfic given the green-light by the original creator of its franchise with the understanding the book will probably never be canon is occupying, like, 99% of my attention, but presuming my plans to shift to being a full-time author supported by my fans via Patreon pans out, I should be able to quit my day job and just focus on projects like this one.

Shelter: Pirate's Eclipse
KENNEDY BEACH OBERON VI OBERON CONFEDERATION 28 SEPTEMBER 3049
Shelter's assessment earlier had been correct. An even dozen lasers, six on each arm. Mediums, by the look of it. No other weapons. Magnetic resonance was convinced the 'Mech was 50 tons. What kind of engine could supply that much power for weapons and still move a 50-ton machine around that quickly? And who the hell designed a 'Mech whose shoulder and hip actuators ran in a straight line right through the torsos?
He and the enemy pilot were circling each other, sizing one another up. The other 'Mechs of the enemy lance stood eerily still. So did the crumpled form of Rieck's Marauder. Why hadn't he punched out yet? He was conscious, had to be, because he'd opened the private channel to receive Shelter's message.
No more time. The enemy tightened their circle in to run directly at Shelter. He slammed down his pedals and ignited the Griffin's jump jets. Light burst from the enemy 'Mech's left arm and gouged nearly all the armor from his left side in a single salvo. Barely anything left on his torso and leg, and the internal structure of his arm was fully laid bare. Burning gods above and below, how powerful were those lasers?! Shelter fired all three of his own in turn. The large and one of the mediums scored deep into the armor of the enemy's right torso; the other medium piddled across their right arm.
Shelter landed harder than he'd intended. Sure, he was certified on a Griffin, but he was still a tech, not a MechWarrior. He'd only ever used jump jets under controlled conditions at the proving grounds. Twice. Six years ago. Automatic systems kept him from stumbling, but he could hear the gyro straining from the effort.
Where was all the heat going in that 'Mech? Twelve lasers, half a dozen at a time in volley fire, in a medium machine. Firing that spread once would put a load on any Griffin, and that was assuming that those over-tuned lasers didn't produce more heat than a standard medium. Yet the enemy didn't seem to feel the heat at all. Shelter scrambled to calculate the minimum heat transfer coefficient to make it work.
Turn off your engineering brain, dumbass! The enemy had executed a neat turn on their own jump jets and brought their left side around to protect their damaged flank. Another six-laser volley and the Griffin's left arm was entirely gone. Hip actuator damaged on the right side. Desperately low armor in both torsos. The neural feedback wasn't in the danger zone, but the loss of the arm was playing havoc with the interplay between the Griffin's gyro and Shelter's own inner ear.
These weren't pirates. Whatever the fuck they were, they were bad news, and they weren't going to stop with the Oberon Confederation.
One more punch of the jets, and the Griffin arced over the enemy machine. Shelter fired the moment his reticle passed over metal, but his eyes were on the beach beyond the cockpit glass. The Marauder's cockpit was still intact. What was Rieck doing?
No, there he was, running along the beach. He'd popped his cockpit hatch and clambered down on his own. The SERE kit pouch was slapping against his thigh as he hauled ass. Good. He could meet up with Razor Two and take refuge in the trees. Shelter prayed to absent gods that he could give them enough time.
Shelter landed more gracefully this time. Still, the impact jarred sweat into his eyes. He blinked desperately. Had to find the enemy.
But the strange 'Mech had collapsed. Shelter's almost literally aimless shots had damaged the enemy's engine and forced a failsafe shutdown.
The remaining enemy 'Mechs were still and silent, as if they were as shocked at the outcome as Shelter was. But soon enough the Catamarauder--Shelter decided it had to be named something--stepped forward. Once again, the woman's voice came over broadband.
"Warrior, you have bested two of Clan Wolf's elite warriors, one in single combat. The outcome of this battle is foregone, but know that your valor is recognized."
"Big talk for someone about to get acquainted with the dirt," Shelter snapped into his mic, then pushed his 'Mech into a run.
The Catamarauder's missile pods roared like lions. Explosions covered the Griffin. Not a single location escaped unscathed, including the head. Two missiles hit high--above the glass, but still close and loud enough to turn the inside of the cockpit into a front seat at the world's worst noise metal concert. Neural feedback, the real shit this time, seared through Shelter's brain.
The Griffin hit the ground. Engine power was gone. Hell, the Griffin itself was probably an unrecognizable slag heap. There was booming and rattling and clanging for what felt like forever. A monitor panel dislodged from the console and bounced off Shelter's neurohelmet. Then, finally, silence, punctuated only by the cartoonish ping-ping-ping of a washer falling into the rear compartment of the cockpit.
Shelter took a moment to catch his breath and assess himself. Probably had a concussion. Always assume a concussion. Gash on his shoulder that he hoped wasn't deep. His muscles and bones were still ringing from the fall. One of his boots had come off.
The radio was on backup power, but there had been a cut somewhere in the feed to the neurohelmet. Shelter popped the buckle on his five-point harness and dragged the bulky helmet off his shoulders. The air against his scalp reminded him that--
He turned up the speaker built into the radio and grabbed the hand unit. "This is Razor Four. Three enemy units in grid gamma six. Razor Lance is down. Request..." He paused. Request what? Reinforcements? Extraction? A blanket and a bedtime story? His head was swimming.
"Warrior Shelter, last of her family," Star Captain Mila spoke on the radio. "Your 'Mech is disabled and your world has fallen. I claim you as isorla for the benefit of Clan Wolf. Stand down and await medical assistance."
"His," Shelter said automatically. "Last of his family."
He let himself fall back against the command couch's back. There was more chatter on the radio, but he didn't bother trying to parse it. He'd failed. He'd been supposed to die in combat, and somehow that was supposed to fix things for Oberon VI and the War Griffins. He was hazy on the details. But here he was, alive and a captive. Failure.
"Fucking pirates," he mumbled. He reached for the SERE kit, but the effort made him dizzy. He didn't remember anything after that.

Queer Book List
I've just updated my complete list of LGBT+ novels ever read (as far as I can remember). Not including short story collections, comics, non-fiction, or things I've completely forgotten.
I'm not including books where a main character's sexuality was only implied (it's got to be clear on the page), and this list contains queer main and secondary characters only, not background characters that play little part in the story.
I don't read a lot of Young Adult, so assume these are all adult-oriented unless otherwise stated.

Quote
Removing the flag from this state’s capitol would not be an act of political correctness; it would not be an insult to the valor of Confederate soldiers. It would simply be an acknowledgment that the cause for which they fought -- the cause of slavery -- was wrong -- (applause) -- the imposition of Jim Crow after the Civil War, the resistance to civil rights for all people was wrong. (Applause.) It would be one step in an honest accounting of America’s history; a modest but meaningful balm for so many unhealed wounds. It would be an expression of the amazing changes that have transformed this state and this country for the better, because of the work of so many people of goodwill, people of all races striving to form a more perfect union. By taking down that flag, we express God’s grace.

Hey! The other day you posted about wanting to find a book series with Mass Effect vibes? The closest I've ever found is the Confederation of Valor series, by Tanya Huff. I read them 10ish years back so I can't promise they hold up, but they scratched that itch for me at the time :)
This is so funny because I literally went and dug this entire series up just a few days ago. I read the first two books a couple of years back but must’ve been in the wrong headspace to take them in at the time because I remember barely anything other than some vague vibes, but those vibes reminded me enough of mass effect that I decided I should give them another go because I too need that itch scratched. This message feels like confirmation from the universe that I made the right choice, thank you!
#i vaguely remember there being aliens that look like elves? and also aliens that look like spiders?#gonna be interesting to see how much i remember when i start rereading book 1#I've adored a lot of huff's other books (quarter series my beloved) so these books SHOULD work#I'm hoping i was just in the wrong place to really appreciate them last time around (has been known to happen before)#thanks again anon this message made me more eager to pick them back up!#also made me laugh a bit bc what are the odds lmao#nella talks books#nella gets asks

April 27th 1650 saw The Battle of Carbisdale. where The Great Montrose fought his last fight.
Montrose was surprised on level ground, near a pass called Invercharron (Invercharron Hill ), on Saturday, 27th April 1650. With his men they tried to reach a wooded, craggy hill in his rear but was overtaken and defeated by Lt-Col. Strachan. "The ground where the battle was fought … took its present name, Craigcaoineadhan, which may be translated the Rock of Lamentation. This site has now been added to the Inventory of Historic Battlefields but there is no memorial on the site.
A wee bit background; Between 1639 and 1653, Scotland was involved in the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, a series of wars starting with the Bishops Wars (between Scotland and England), the Irish Rebellion of 1641, the English Civil War (and its extension in Scotland), the Irish Confederate Wars, and finally the subjugation of Ireland and Scotland by the English Roundhead New Model Army.
In 1650 he, to all intents sacrificed Montrose , one of the best generals in the royalist cause, sending him on a doomed mission to Scotland. Charles risked little other than minor damage to his reputation, as he was talking with the Covenanter government of Scotland. The force under Montrose was around 500 Danish mercenaries and 40 or so loyal if now desperate royalist gentlemen soldiers.
Had Graham miraculously won through and got a foothold or even sparked an uprising and taken Scotland Charles gained enormously; otherwise the cavalier cause was down a few brave men and one great general.
Montrose sailed from Bergen to Orkney , where he gathered a further 750 to 1,000 mercenaries to his colours, landing his augmented force at John O’Groats via Orkney on April 12th.
The Marquis, after initial progress south had to edge back to the Kyle of Sutherland, where a small Scottish government force under Colonel Archibald Strachan tracked him down. Strachan lulled Montrose into inaction, tricking him into believing the chasing force was insignificant. Then Strachan attacked.
Archibald in fact had fewer than 250 cavalry, and only 36 musketeers; plus around 400 Highlanders on whom little reliance could be placed. Caught unawares though, Montrose’s troops were panicked, the Danes proving less than valorous. A rout followed the first charge, and just 100 of Montrose’s men survived the slaughter. The Marquess himself though badly wounded escaped.
After wandering in the hills with the hue and cry out against him, so hungry that he was reduced to eating his gloves, he took refuge at Ardvreck Castle with Neil MacLeod of Assynt, but there was a substantial reward to be earned for him and Macleod surrendered him to the authorities. Macleod got his money and his name has stunk in Scottish nostrils ever since.
He was paraded from northern Scotland to Edinburgh with his crimes advertised and his name degraded. Graham was outlawed, excommunicated, and attained for the crime of treason in 1644. Thus, the process of his legal death began years before he was finally captured and publically executed in Edinburgh in 1650, this basically meant he got no trial, he merely appeared before the court and the formal sentence of death was handed down on May 20th
His humiliation didn’t stop at his death, the punishment for treason extended beyond the extinction of life as the corpses of traitors were used to send out stark and richly symbolic messages. In Montrose’s case, his head was spiked on top of Edinburgh’s Old Tolbooth and his limbs were displayed in four of Scotland’s main towns.
I shall cover this in more depth on May 21st.

UNIT PROFILE – 54TH MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT The Emancipation Proclamation’s promulgation in 1863 opened the Union Army’s ranks to Black soldiers for the first time, allowing Black Americans to fight for the Union’s preservation and the end of slavery. The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was among the first all-Black units to be stood up. Led by COL Robert Gould Shaw (scion of a prominent abolitionist family) and promoted by prominent figures like Frederick Douglass, the 54th was flooded with recruits. Despite Confederate promises to punish captured Black soldiers and their white officers with summary execution for promoting “servile insurrection,” the 54th marched to war in high spirits, leaving Boston on 28 MAY. From 18 – 19 JUL the Union began operations to capture Fort Wagner (a critical part of the harbor defenses of Charleston, South Carolina) following an early unsuccessful attack from 10 – 11 JUL. Deploying a force of 5,000 infantry in a frontal assault, the Union placed the 54th in the vanguard of the attack force, sending them charging across an open field towards Ft. Wagner under withering rifle and artillery fire rained on them by the 1,800 Confederate defenders. COL Shaw led the 54th up the fortifications, rallying his men with a cry of “Forward Fifty-Fourth!” from atop the ramparts before being killed. Despite their commander’s death the 54th pushed on, engaging the rebels in bitter hand-to-hand fighting. Despite 54th’s best efforts, the Union was unable to break through the fort’s defenses; the 54th paid an exorbitant price for its extraordinary valor, suffering a staggering 42% casualty rate (280 of the 600 of its men who fought in the Second Battle of Ft. Wagner). The stories of the 54th’s heroism quickly spread across the Union, motivating Black Americans to enlist in the U.S. Army. Between 1863 and 1865 nearly 200,000 Black soldiers served the cause of liberty, contributing roughly 10% of the U.S. Army’s Civil War manpower. #Armyhistory #USArmy #TRADOC #CivilWar #CivilWarHistory #ArmyHeritage #MilitaryHistory #BlackHistoryMonth #54thmassachusetts Posted @withregram • @armyhistory (at Army Recruiting Columbia, TN) https://www.instagram.com/p/CocK6HVutK2/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Working group presents proposal to reduce banking spreads in Brazil
Proposals include unified collateral registry and bankruptcy law amendment with Senate bill
Created under the Sustainable Economic and Social Development Council, the so-called Banking Spread Working Group is set to present a series of recommendations to Vice President Geraldo Alckmin on Thursday. The proposals aim to encourage the federal government, Congress, and the Judiciary to implement improvements in Brazil’s credit sector. The presentation will occur during an event at the Itamaraty Palace.

This working group includes executives from banks like Itaú and Bradesco, as well as representatives from the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) and the Brazilian Federation of Banks (FEBRABAN).
The suggestions were organized into six categories, divided into short, medium, and long-term measures. One category addresses default rates and costs associated with credit operation losses.
